Story of Prajwala is an unheard one, probably pushed behind the blinds. Such power lies in the hands of those who fear it. Prajwala is an organization working actively for rescue and rehabilitation of sex workers. It has got roots all over India. Centered at Hyderabad, Prajwala has got a powerful leader Sunitha Krishnan.
From early childhood itself Sunitha was drawn into social works. Over the years, experiences earned and plight of the victims prompted her to stand up for them. Prajwala under her leadership grew into a powerful organization. They now plan rescue operations and accompany the police in raids. Their works are the fruits of such precise planning and execution. These acts however bring them into in to the spotlight and more exposed to threats.
Prajwala has rescued more than 6000 girls in its fifteen years journey. Still more are prevented from a dreadful fate. Its working is sort of an action movie. With rackets and mafias always around them, their lives at great threat. Sunitha lost one of her eardrum during an encounter with these rackets and also witnessed a co-worker brutally murdered. Such attacks show how deep their working is. They were constantly attacked and their works obstructed. These attacks were however much less intense than the fire in the heart Prajwala workers.
Prajwala’s powerful weapons are the victims. They are often hard to bring back to normal life. But once they are brought back, they have shown courage to fight against the reasons for their torture along with Prajwala. Such incidents have led to many arrests.
Rehabilitation of the rescued was initially a problem, but was soon tackled by innovative thoughts. Prajwala has to ensure a proper life and prevention from a going back. Survivors were trained in various vocations and their efforts have produced a factory for employment. These acts made them self reliant.
Prajwala’s greatest assets are its workers. Their daring acts have promised a better life for many. Prajwala runs more than 15 schools to ensure the education and welfare of the survivors.The organization have been honoured by many institutions including UN.
But the greatest honour will be to witness a country were womanhood is respected. Prajwala’s ways are defining a better path for tomorrow.
